UNICEF WASH in Emergencies for Standby Partners

The UNICEF WASH in Emergencies Training for Standby Partners (WiE) has been developed by UNICEF in collaboration with Standby Partners (SBP). With 27% of all SBP deployments during year 2010 WASH is the biggest sector for requests for SBP personnel requiring diverse skill-sets as well as a familiarity with WASH issues and responses and UNICEF’s mode of operation in emergencies.

Course aims and objectives

The aim of this non-technical course is to enhance participants’ knowledge on WASH in humanitarian emergencies and provide an opportunity to develop and practice a range of core skills necessary for UNICEF WASH Officers.
At the end of the course, participants should:
•    Understand the general emergency context in which WASH occurs
•    Have attained a basic knowledge of UNICEF as an organisation and its mode of operation in emergencies
•    Have developed an appreciation of the analytical framework within which WASH exists including the international legal framework, UNICEF Core Commitments for Children in Emergencies, codes of conduct and guiding principles.
•    Understand the scope and range of UNCEF WASH interventions in emergencies, including both implementation and coordination facets of UNICEF’s commitment
•    Have enhanced skills in areas such as programming, assessments, advocacy and participatory techniques
•    Have an opportunity to further develop interpersonal skills necessary for WASH Officers in emergencies such as negotiation, facilitation, communication and team work
•    Have an opportunity to learn from other’s experiences in real emergencies, and share own experiences and expectations.

Course Content

The course contains a range of modules relevant to the work of UNICEF WASH Officers. Topics include:
•    UNICEF’s Mandate and Core Commitments for Humanitarian Interventions
•    Humanitarian Reform and Cluster Approach – including Cluster meeting simulation
•    Emergency Programming with Others
•    Working the UNICEF System - including finance, supply and human resources
•    Emergency Preparedness
•    Standards for WiE
•    Cross-cutting issues for WiE
•    Programming & Advocacy for WiE
•    Simulation exercise

The course includes a range of practical activities and simulations where participants can practice the range of skills they have developed throughout the course. This culminates in a full-day Simulation.

Pre-reading/self learning:

These will be made available after confirmation of enrolment.
Participants will have the chance, in dedicated evening sessions, to share their experiences with peers and facilitators. Everybody is therefore encouraged to carry personal material such a pictures, video, etc. related to real emergency deployments.

Candidates for the course

  • WASH professionals with domestic experience
  • WASH experts with international humanitarian experience (implementation, Coordination and Information Management)

The participants will be evaluated during the course by the trainers.

Course date and venue

The course runs from 25 - 29 July 2011.
The course is hosted by the RedR Australia (RedR) and will take place entirely at Dookie College, Victoria, Australia.
