UNICEF Child Protection Training for Standby Partners

The Child Protection (CP) Training for Standby Partners (SBPs) has been developed by UNICEF in collaboration with Standby Partners in response to the rapid changes that have occurred in the child protection sector over the last 5 years. Almost half of all requests for Standby Partner personnel are now for child protection deployments requiring diverse skill‐sets as well as a familiarity with child protection issues and responses and UNICEF’s modes of operation in emergencies.

Course Aims and Objectives

The aim of this course is to enhance participants’ knowledge on child protection in humanitarian emergencies and provide an opportunity to develop and practice a range of core skills identified as crucial for UNICEF Child Protection Officers. At the end of the course, participants should:
• Understand the general emergency context in which child protection occurs
• Have attained a basic knowledge of UNICEF as an organisation and its mode of operation in emergencies
• Have developed an appreciation of the analytical framework within which child protection exists including the international legal framework, UNICEF Core Commitments for Children in Emergencies, codes of conduct and guiding principles.
• Understand the scope and range of UNCEF child protection interventions in emergencies
• Have enhanced core skills for Child Protection Officers including, programming, assessments, advocacy and participatory techniques
• Have an opportunity to further develop interpersonal skills necessary for Child Protection Officers in emergencies such as negotiation, facilitation and team work

Course Content

The course contains a range of modules relevant to the work of UNICEF Child Protection Officers. Topics include:
• UNICEF’s Approach to Emergencies
• UNICEF’s Approach to Child Protection
• Principles, Laws and Tools in Child Protection
• Child‐friendly Participatory Methodologies
• Child Protection Needs Assessment
• Needs Analysis
• Working with Others – UNICEF & Partnerships
• Child Protection & the Cluster System
• Programming & Advocacy for Child Protection
• Negotiation

The course also includes a range of practical activities and simulations where participants can practice the range of skills they have developed throughout the course.

Pre‐reading / Self Learning:

Prior to the course, participants are expected to complete the following e‐learning modules:
• A Principled Approach To Humanitarian Action (PATH) ‐UNICEF.
• Introduction to Child Protection in Emergencies – An interagency modular training package.
• Welcome to UNICEF: An Orientation

These will be made available after confirmation of enrolment.

Candidates for the course

• Child Protection professionals with domestic experience
• Protection experts with international humanitarian experience but not necessarily child protection experience

This course is open to the general public, NGO community and AusAID, however places will be strictly limited, with priority given to RedR Australia Standby Register Members whose applications will be screened by UNICEF.
