Protection Capacity Standby Training

Overview

The ProCap (Stand-By Protection Capacity) Initiative has been developed to address a critical need for qualified, experienced stand-by protection personnel.  ProCap seeks to strengthen existing stand-by arrangements by increasing the number of qualified protection personnel available for short-term missions, enhance the protection capacity within NGO standby rosters, expand the linguistic and cultural diversity of roster members, and improve the quality of temporary protection personnel through additional and comprehensive training. The value of ProCap lies in enhancing protection work at field level by contributing to an inter-agency approach and protection competencies within partner agencies.  ProCap is now also able to include some current UN staff in its training events.

Objectives

The objective of the training is to provide participants with a variety of skills which will allow for more effective protection deployments and work in the field, with a focus on analysis and strategy as well as attitudes and values which are transferable to the range of situations in which deployees and staff may find themselves.
At the end of the training, participants will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of protection and the dynamics of displacement which is operational and applicable at the field level during deployments.
  • Articulate an inter-agency and collaborative approach to protection, including coordination mechanisms and bases for partnership.
  • Plan and implement a participatory protection assessment, analysis, and strategy.
  • Craft a protection advocacy plan and identify opportunities to advocate for protection.
  •  Identify his or her own strengths and prioritize areas for further development.

Methodology

The six-day course is built on a variety of methodologies, stressing active learning through a range of small-group, role-play, presentation, team and individual activities.

A minimal number of didactic sessions will present frameworks which will then be applied through exercises and a complex case study.

The final day will include time for written presentation as well as self-assessment and individual interviews with facilitators to discuss individual strengths, weaknesses, and plans for skills development.

Participants will have the opportunity to provide feedback to facilitators on each day’s sessions, highlighting areas for further clarification and development throughout the course.  Evaluation of the entire programme will occur on the last day.

Training of Trainers

Colleagues who have previously completed the ProCap training, and training of trainers, will be co-facilitating during the week as part of the integral Training-of-Trainers initiative.

ProCap Online

ProCap Online, the website maintained by ProCap on the Project, has a library with a wide range of protection resource documents, including those used on the course.  ProCap Online can be accessed through the Protection Cluster website at:
