WFP “Let’s Comm” (Technical training on VHF & HF radio communications)

This 7-day training course is targeted at people who need skills in deploying VHF and HF radio infrastructure. This course is facilitated by the World Food Programme – in collaboration with RedR Australia.

Overview

This course is primarily for people with a Telecommunications focus; individuals working within the commercial and NGO sector are welcome to apply. Due to the complexity of the course it is recommended that participants have a technical background in radio communications (at least 2 years). Knowledge of Motorola and Codan programming as well as end-user experience is desirable. On passing the course, participants will be eligible for deployment through RedR Australia with WFP or parent organisation.
Starting from 2011, there will be an online entry test for applicants wishing to attend this course. The purpose of this is to ensure all participants arrive with a minimum level of knowledge, allowing the class to proceed at the designed pace.
There is a maximum of 12 participants for this course.

Key Objective

ICT staff will be able to plan, deploy and maintain UN & WFP standard telecommunications infrastructure, focusing on VHF and HF radios, to an intermediate level.

Course Content

The course familiarizes staff with MOSS standards and gives an overview of the UN / WFP telecommunications standards and Long-Term Agreements for Codan and Motorola equipment. It also covers the UN Call Signs, Selcall System, and the WFP standard radio installation procedures. In more practical terms, the course is intended to train participants in the following areas.
 
The course is expected to equip staff with the skills and knowledge to be able to design, implement and maintain Motorola VHF and Codan NGT HF networks according to WFP and UN standards. This course includes intensive hands on training in the installation and configuration of key communications equipment.
• Designing and Planning of HF and VHF network according to WFP Standards
• Assign HF/VHF call signs to stations/individuals using UN standard call sign and sel-call system
• Program HF & VHF radios (& Repeaters) according to WFP Standard
• Installation of HF & VHF equipment (In cars + radio rooms)
• Maintenance of Radio equipment
• Satellite phones (BGAN, Thuraya, Iridium)
• Installation and use of solar packs
• Radio room procedures
• MOSS Standard
• WFP standard equipment, selection of equipment

Cost:
Individual Rate: $1 650
NGO rate: $1 350
RedR Australia Standby Register personnel: $1 100
*As the program will start at 08:00 on 3 May, participants will need to arrive on the evening of 2 May.
**Course fees include accommodation and food, however, not travel expenses to Dookie.
